MusicXML preserves useful notation and structure, but opening the file is only the beginning. Pianists still need to locate demanding passages, divide the piece into musical units, and decide how to move from first reading to a complete performance.

Import, difficulty analysis, and structure analysis do not need a MIDI instrument. With a compatible device, assessment can stay attached to the relevant measure, phrase, or complete piece.

PianoTrace separates score-based features from performance-based features so the required file, device, and subscription are clear before you begin.
Supported score formats
Import .musicxml, .xml files that contain MusicXML, and compressed .mxl scores. PDF files, score images, and MIDI files used as scores are not currently supported.
No MIDI required for score analysis
Score import, notation viewing, difficulty analysis, and structure analysis work from the digital score and do not require a connected MIDI device.
MIDI required for performance feedback
Performance detection, scoring, and score-aware annotations require a compatible digital piano or MIDI keyboard and sufficient MIDI performance data.

Full difficulty detail, Smart Practice paths, detailed annotations, and some advanced features require PianoTrace Pro.

Common questions
Which score files can I import into PianoTrace?
PianoTrace supports .musicxml, MusicXML-based .xml, and compressed .mxl score files.
Can I import a PDF, a photo of sheet music, or a MIDI file as the score?
No. PDF and image scores are not currently supported, and a MIDI file cannot be used as the digital score. Convert or export the notation to a supported MusicXML format first.
Do I need a MIDI piano to use a MusicXML score?
No. Import, difficulty analysis, and structure analysis do not need MIDI. A compatible MIDI device is required for performance detection and scoring.
Which MusicXML practice features require PianoTrace Pro?
Full difficulty detail, Smart Practice paths, detailed performance annotations, and some advanced features require PianoTrace Pro.
